Unveiling the 5000
Year-Old Medical Secret!
How does the modern cycle of medicines move? You fall sick and
visit the doctor who will prescribe a medicine. You buy the
medicine and consume it. Hopefully you become better!
You would perhaps avoid someone who prescribes you an herbal
medicine thinking that he is a quack and does not know anything
about modern medicines. Interestingly studies are being conducted
today to assess whether there is any truth and merit in what are
called natural medicines.
What is natural medicine? It is nothing but the use of natural and
herbal medicines and methods along with traditional practices to
treat a disease condition. From time immemorial, traditional
village medicine men used to play the role of the community doctor
who passed on their knowledge and expertise to the follower
apprentices and the medical theories continued.
Traditional medicine, complementary medicine, and alternative
medicine are three of the many categories of natural medicine,
though traditionally natural medicine refers to medical practices
which were prevalent before modern medicines took over.
Herbal medicine or phyto-therapy, which has Chinese origin,
Ayurvedic medicines which has Indian origin and Greek medicine are
included in this category.
With the advent of modern medicines, many forgot the use of herbs
for natural cure and started to rely more on man made drugs for
treating an ailment.
Opium, digitalis, quinine, and aspirin are some of the examples of
traditional medicines.
Though natural medicines might be treated as an art lost in
oblivion, the efficacy of natural medicines has not got lost. In
fact, in the treatment of many ailments, natural medication is far
more effective than synthetic and modern medicines. Its long term
efficacy has triggered a renewed interest amongst doctors who feel
that it is time to seriously consider detailed studies to evaluate
the possible uses of natural medicine.
Before we proceed further in the matter it is important to note
that legitimacy of many natural remedies is under doubt. In your
own interest of safety it is always wise to try only those
remedies which are tried and tested.
Take the instance of herbal remedies. While there are innumerable
well-documented research reports on a number of herbal remedies,
health professionals are likely to recommend only those herbal
remedies which cure minor ailments like cough, cold, fever, skin
rashes and the like. This is perhaps because of the common notion
that herbal medications are low in negative side effects.
These there are numerous organizations which study the effects of
natural medicine, including herbal medicine and preach its
efficacy. There are also many governments and health agencies
which are promoting the use of natural medication as they are more
affordable and relatively harmless.
With more number of studies being added, more herbal medications
are getting included in the list of accepted medicines. It is also
important to know that a lot of herbs have been proved to be bogus
and useless. This is providing a new challenge to many health
agencies since they have to ascertain and be completely sure of
the efficacy of the herb before they can promote its use and add
to its legitimacy.
Today there are various alternative medical remedies which get
categorized under natural medicines but have not been found to be
very effective. Homeopathy, aromatherapy and acupuncture therapy
are a few such therapies – where it is best to seek expert advice
regarding its legitimacy as well as efficacy.
Natural medicines are rightfully to be considered as adjunct
therapy which supports the accepted modern medical practices. At
least that is the collective opinion of the modern medical
fraternity. So for minor ailments, natural medicines can work.
The basic difference between modern medicine and natural medicine
is that modern medicine works as a result of a diagnosis done
prior to prescription, whereas natural medicine need not wait for
any sickness and subsequent diagnosis. It can be given as a
preventive medication or even to inculcate healthy habits in an
individual so as to prevent the disease from attacking in the
first place. Good diet, healthy lifestyle and regular natural
medical treatment are part of the overall health maintenance plan
of natural medicines.
This is very similar to our parents telling us to eat a lot of
vegetables and fruits. A healthy eating habit and lifestyle do a
lot of good to our general well being. This is the basis of
natural medicine whether it is massage, herbal medicines,
aromatherapy or any other.
It is very interesting to see that today modern research
techniques are used to find truth about the health secrets which
existed nearly 5000 years ago. And surprisingly remedial options
are taking us back to where we started from. While the ongoing
research into natural medicines is throwing up immense
possibilities for the future, it is time to wait and watch whether
these findings can benefit the health of the average man and his
society.
