Basics of Herbs.

Herbs are low-growing and aromatic plants which are used for culinary and medicinal purposes. They could be used fresh or dried for seasoning or they could be used in perfumes as well. Super kelp, garlic, parsley, green tea extract, horse chestnut, and milk thistle and oregano oil are some of the thousands of herbs which are in use today.

As far as their medicinal properties are concerned, they are mostly used for their disease fighting and body strengthening capabilities. The active substances contained in these herbs could well act with other herbs, supplements or your current medication. So before taking on any herbs, it is best that you consult an herbal practitioner.


Super Kelp

One of the best known natural sources for iodine and trace elements, super kelp is also known as sea kelp and sea wrack. It is a sea herb. It is used as a cure for obesity, kidney cleansing, thyroid stimulation and triggering the pituitary to produce more growth hormones.

Garlic

The natural antibiotic property of garlic is used as a disinfectant, treat ear infections, cholera and typhus. It also has anti-fungal and anti-oxidant properties along with cholesterol reducing abilities. It has a pronounced beneficial effect on people suffering from heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and cancer. Any overdose of garlic can result in stomach/flatulence, occupational asthma, postoperative bleeding, bloating, bad breath, body odor, and skin irritation. Garlic is contraindicated for people having bleeding disorders.

Parsley

If you are looking for an herb which is one of the richest natural sources for vitamins A, B, C and minerals calcium, iron, phosphorous, potassium and magnesium, you should look at Parsley or Petroselinum. It is also a well-known diuretic which is loaded with nutrition. Because of its diuretic properties it is also good for the kidney and urinary problems as well as water retention issues. This statement summarizes the goodness of parsley: “if parsley is thrown into fishponds it will heal the sick fishes therein”

Green Tea Extract

One of the most effective anti-oxidants which nature has given us is the green tea extract, which is known to prevent both heart ailments and cancer. It does so by preventing blood clotting and reducing cholesterol. Its anti microbial properties build the immune system and protect the body from digestive and respiratory tract infections. Of course any overdose of this herb could result in irritability, insomnia, heart palpitation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and loss of appetite.

Horse chestnut

This herb works on the circulatory system. It strengthens the capillary cells and helps in the reduction of fluid breakage. Its antioxidant properties are used for the prevention of wrinkles. The other areas where this herb is used include: phlebitis, varicosity and hemorrhoids.

Milk Thistle

The active ingredients of this liver protect the liver from damage caused by viral infection, toxins and alcohol. It helps in the upkeep of healthy liver functions. This herb is also a proven remedy for anthrax, asthma, bladder stones, cancer, catarrh, chest ailments, dropsy, fever, bleeding from the lungs or bronchia, hepatitis, rabies, jaundice, vaginal discharge, malaria, melancholy, piles, plague, pleurisy, spasms, and spleen and uterus problems. Overdose of this herb may result in stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, rash or other skin reactions, joint pain, impotence, and anaphylaxis. Pregnant women and nursing mothers are advised not to use this herb.

Oregano Oil

Rich in healing, anti-oxidant and anti-microbial properties, Oregano oil is used to treat a wide range of ailments including mildly upset stomach, bronchitis, nervous tension, insect bites, rheumatism, earache, toothaches and even athlete's foot. The herb is also effective in relieving symptoms of the following disease conditions: bloating, gas, urinary tract problems, rheumatoid arthritis, swollen glands, and lack of perspiration. Additionally, it has strong ‘morphine’ properties and used as an effective pain killer.
