Health Care – All You Should Know
Summary: A complete guidance of what should be done for complete
health care. Sign an insurance plan only after you review the plan
in detail. Protect your family wisely!
Your family is your most valued possession and as such, their
health and well being always come first. A good family doctor and
a Pediatrician if you have small children are of paramount
importance. Other medical professionals might need to be in the
mix, such as an OB/GYN or other specialist to deal with any
problems you may have. And let’s not forget a family dentist. He’s
important too.
However, proper medical care is expensive today, so it’s vital
that your family be adequately covered with medical insurance. If
husband or wife is employed on a full-time basis, one or both
probably have the option to join their company’s group medical
plan. If not, you’ll be looking for individual medical insurance
coverage. With today’s prices for medical care, being without
health insurance is just too big a risk to take.
Private health insurance is frequently termed individual health
insurance by providers. There are an almost unlimited number of
companies offering them just about everywhere. The titles,
however, are somewhat misleading as these individual or private
plans are also available to families with somewhat higher
premiums. Family health plans have you, your spouse and your
offspring all on the same plan. This is what you will have to
purchase in the event group coverage is not available from your
employer. Plans are also available for students and seniors, but
in the U.S., people at age 65 become eligible for Medicare and
must forfeit their individual coverage.
The rules, terms and conditions that govern individual and group
health coverage plans vary widely depending on your location.
Moreover, some companies may exclude covering you for certain
conditions because they were existing when you sought coverage.
This is called exclusion due to pre-existing conditions.
The costs for individual policies are determined by your age,
habits, health history and lifestyle. It’s also likely that you’ll
pay more if you are a smoker because insurance companies view
smokers as being a higher risk for cancer, heart disease,
emphysema and other diseases.
If you are receiving coverage under a family group plan, chances
are you will receive better quality benefits. For example, the
providers cannot cancel your coverage due to the fact that you’ve
had too many claims. This is because if they did so, they would
have to follow suit for all members covered by the same plan.
Some plans allow you to choose your own doctors and hospitals.
Others, called HMO’s or health maintenance organizations, require
you to choose one primary doctor from a list and use a certain
hospital or clinic. In this case, if you need to see a specialist,
you will need a referral from your primary physician. Also keep in
mind that almost no health care providers include dental coverage.
If you need to purchase dental insurance such plans are available
separately. You will also find rather limited coverage for
eyeglasses and dentures in these plans.
Finally, remember to discuss and review any insurance plans in
detail before you sign up. These are complicated legal contracts
carefully structured by insurance company attorneys with all kinds
of pitfalls if you don’t understand the terms and conditions.
Review by the family attorney is probably a good idea.
